Cataloging Blu-rays
My husband and I are having discussions about upgrades to our home entertainment center. One upgrade we considered, and then went with, was adding a Blu-ray player. Since we are on a budget, we try to rent Blu-ray discs from our local library instead of purchasing them, which leads me to the discussion--cataloging Blu-rays to be accessible in the library online catalog.
Like any other video recording, a bibliographic record for a Blu-ray disc will require an 007, 008, ISBN, call number, title, publication information, physical description, system requirement note, actors note, subject and genre headings, and added entries.
OR
538 _ _ Requires a Blu-ray player.
Like any other video recording, a bibliographic record for a Blu-ray disc will require an 007, 008, ISBN, call number, title, publication information, physical description, system requirement note, actors note, subject and genre headings, and added entries.
- The 007 field will reflect unique nature of the Blu-ray disc.
- The GMD used in the 245 field is videorecording. If you are part of a library consortium, additional information may be included.
- The 538 is used to indicate that only Blu-ray players can be used to play the disc.
OR
538 _ _ Requires a Blu-ray player.
- It may be useful to include a 500 note with "Blu-ray" in it. This will allow staff and customers to conduct a keyword search to retrieve all titles in the Blu-ray format.

Hello and Welcome
When I started my employment at the West Virginia Library Commission, I was charged with creating a web presence for cataloging. That presence become the "Cataloging Help Desk." Over the past three years, this service was moved to the back burner to assist in migrating the Library Commission and Archives & History Library, a Division of Culture and History, to a new integrated library system.
Now that stuff has settled, I wanted to bring back the "Cataloging Help Desk" but include other Technical Services related issues. Getting away from creating state web page creation was a must for me, too. This blog became the solution.
So, check back often. If you have questions or comments, please post it in the comments section.
Regards
